Piston air motors are generally small fractional and low horsepower motors that are ideal for small control operations where maximum torque and accurate control are required. Much has been made of lightweight construction and simplicity of the radial piston air motor including those made of high performance machine-grade plastics such as Acetal. However, there is also a long history of compressed air piston motors being used for automotive power such as short-range rail shunters and mine locomotives where re-charging the pressurised cylinder is not a problem.
